France 24 television interview

Harvesting, published by New Island to critical acclaim in 2017 has just recently been published as Abbatage (to great reviews so far!) with Joelle Losfeld at Gallimard Press, Paris. I was lucky enough to be invited over for a whirlwind press tour in advance of publication on the 28th March.

The whole experience was like a dream, from being picked up at the airport and brought to the charming Hotel de L’université at the heart of Saint Germain des Pres; to dinners/lunches/ (always the offer of champagne!); to being ferried from interviews with Macha Séry for ‘Le Monde des Livres’,  Francis Brochet for ‘Le Progrès and Fiachra Gibbons for Agence France Presse. The publishing house itself is quite simply one of the most stunning buildings I’ve ever been in. True Parisian chic! Joelle Losfeld and all her crew are truly hospitable and welcoming.

On arrival at the publishing house, I was whisked away for a photography session with their in-house photographer Francesca Mantovani (portraits of all their authors adorn the walls). The following morning, I had my first TV interview on France 24, which was a brilliant experience. On my last day, lunch with my translator Christel Paris was organised, which was a great honour. As someone who studied French in Trinity, I was thrilled with the level of care and skill Christel showed with the nuance of voice for both characters.

This is only the beginning of my French adventure as I’m off to Deauville Literary Festival in May with some of Joelle’s other Irish writers: Roddy Doyle, Lisa McInerney and Dermot Bolger.

Thank you to New Island for publishing me in the first instance and for this wonderful opportunity.
