Now That's What I Call Jargon

Plain English has become an endangered species in Ireland as more and more people sign up for a version of the language that is riddled with jargon and smothered in clichés.

Now That’s What I Call Jargon,  written by RTÉ broadcaster John Murray,  charts the rise and rise of  such gems as ‘going forward’, ‘granularity’, and ‘growing the business’, and wonders if there are no limits for those in the pursuit of ‘blue-sky thinking’ and ‘silver bullets’.

In a country where the Financial Regulator employs a team of people to translate the language of the banking world into understandable English, John Murray asks why we in Ireland have embraced this new jargon-laden language with such enthusiasm.

He points the finger at some of the worst offenders – politicians and business people who never tire of telling us about their ‘multi-channel capabilities’, and wonders at the lengths to which people will go to say a lot without really saying anything at all.
