Kingstown Republican
David Andrews was first elected to Dáil Éireann in 1965. However, as a vocal critic of Charles Haughey, he was confined to the backbenches during Haughey's thirteen-year period as leader. He maintained his legal practice during these years and returned to government as Minister for Foreign Affairs under Albert Reynolds in 1992 and under Bertie Ahern in 1997. He retired in 1999.
Now available in paperback, this highly personal and long-awaited memoir looks back at his political tussles with Haughey, his role in focusing American and UN attention on Somalia and his account of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. His recollections of campaigns on behalf of the Birmingham Six and other humanitarian causes also offer new insight into these events. This timely political memoir sheds light not only on David Andrews’s life and career but also on the many changes Ireland as a nation has undergone over the past forty years.
