Ladies and Gentlemen
Ladies and Gentlemen is set in a New York dressing-room where the past re-enacts itself on the night of a vaudeville star's last comeback. Inspired by an 1895 newspaper exposé of Annie Hindle - the mustachioed 'Monarch of Male Impersonation', who threw it all away for love - Ladies and Gentlemen conjures up the tragicomic figure of a woman outed by the tabloids as 'a man's widow and a woman's widower'. Along wtih a colourful cast of characters including Tony, the crooked manager, Gilbert, the petticoat-clad female impersonator, and Ella, the stagedresser who hungers for the spotlight, Ladies and Gentlemen explores the dreams and survival strategies of emigrants, and the pleasures and risks of playing a role.
Praise for Ladies and Gentleman:
'Ladies and Gentlemen plays wonderful theatrical games, gently blurring the sexual boundaries between gender and identity...a deeply satisfying and moving meditation on life in love and theatre' Sunday Tribune
'Extraordinary love story...she tells it wonderfully: simply, tenderly and eloquently' Sunday Independent
